Guerrillas In The Mist

In Training

The ash swirled in slow eddies down into the courtyard settling in drifts on the flagstones. Occasional gusts of wind would pick up and it would swirl around the figures, one sat watching two standing facing each other. One stood nonchalantly grinning, hands in his pockets. The slighter figure was stood, shoulders hunched intense concertation written across her face.

With a burst of speed Nebellea, launched herself forward swiping with the heavy wooden stave. Quinn barely moved, rotating at the waist so the sword cut empty air. A swift sidestep maneuvered him away from the follow up cut and as Nebellea swept in low, teeth bared he simply leapt over the attack.

He tossed his head slightly flicking his hair out of his eyes. “Very nice Bella, you almost hit me that time,”

Nebellea snarls “Shut up Quillan!”

I do not know why he infuriates me so much, it’s just the way he always smirks when he is beating me

With a growl of frustration Nebellea jabbed forwards trying to score a hit. Again Quinn lazily avoided the blow. Vaulting into the air and landing behind her. He spun in a graceful arc sweeping Nebellea’s legs from under her so she fell with a yelp. Quinn was on her in a second, with one arm beneath her when she fell Quinn simply landed on her, one arm twisting and locking hers and the other pressing on the back of Nebellea’s head. She kicked and thrashed for a few seconds but face down in the ash with Quinn’s whole weight on her back her struggles became half hearted.

“Quinn I think that’s enough,” Pidge stepped forwards hands in a placating motion. Still smiling Quinn released Nebbelea muzzing her hair.

“Don’t feel bad Bella, I’m sure if Pallino can learn to count his own money you can get the hang of not getting hit.”

Nebellea sat up coughing face and clothes streak with a new layer of ash. She glowered at the two boys, daring them to comment further.

“My Lady are you alright?”

“It’s not My Lady any more Pellek, call her Bella or Nebby or Nebs”

“I hate being called Nebby,” She replied archly, straightening to her feet with exagerated dignity.

He’s changed a lot since I first met the scrawny young Skaa. He’s getting taller and filling out now he’s getting decent meals. He’s even starting to carry himself like a noble. I guess I should be proud of him if he was not so aggravating

“Well Nebellea whenever you are ready please reset and go again”

New friends and Old Memories

So I finally met Kristaris. He wasn’t really what I was expecting, but it was quite exciting really. There’s not a lot of skaa allomancers around but given what he said…im wondering if maybe the resistance is the place to find them. People with skills like mine…they’d be extremely useful in a fight to overthrow the obligators.

But, you see, that’s what has me worried. I like the idea of doing good and I’ve always defended myself when it mattered but now…he’s asking if I’d kill guards. Kill loyal skaa. Kill, full stop. I’ve wanted to kill people, that steel misting pirate for example, but this is a whole new ball game. Going into somewhere looking to take down the people inside…it sounds wrong. I made excuses, said I needed to ask my friends, but really I don’t know if I’m ready to stand up to the obligators as the most illegal thing in existence. Something they’d kill with barely a cursory nod. It felt good to show someone else what I am though. I felt pride in what I’ve learnt.

Once we’d met though, I could take some time away. I haven’t seen Pidge, Penn or Pallino much. I’m adjusting to the city well enough but they’ve been caged up with Bella and Fallow and lord ruler knows what that might do to a person. They’re at least on speaking terms again. Pidge seems alright, him and nebellea seem to be getting on well…which in and of itself is amusing and terrifying. Penn is still my rock in all this craziness: he got some horseshoes while out getting supplies as an extra for when I get in fights and I’m quite flattered by the gesture.

Pallino is more…restless. I think he sees the whole house servant thing as a step down. I tried to speak to nebellea about it but she was frankly quite dissuading. Her and Alhara seemed to think it was better to have him as a servant because we could trust him, but that isn’t why we’re doing this. He wants more involvement in store related things: he seems himself as a more mercantile Skaa and that’s what he wants to do. But they can only think what is convenient for them: Alhara explained why she felt that way but Nebellea said because he lacked the expertise, she wouldn’t let him. She wouldn’t even agree to let him train or be involved in a small bit. If we all did what we were simply trained to do this far in the lives, then fuck the rebellion because skaa will still provide the manual labour and nobles will still rule. Because that’s what we’ve experience doing.

And where does that leave the terris? Alhara told me more about their lives, the breeding programs, and the various aspects of being a terris steward. It was interesting, hearing so much about a place I barely knew existed months ago. She’s got a lot of unresolved guilt and anger from that time and it was nice to see her be a bit more human. A bit less cold. I’m hoping it’s a start.

Chapter 30 Summary -

Resistance is Futile
- Quinn had a meeting with Kistaris a reclusive Resistance contact who questioned Quinn’s motives but agreed to get in contact with him through Hank.

The Box and Science!

- Alhara, Nebellea and Quinn tested to see if they could spot Feruchemy with Bronze and if it could be covered with a copper cloud.

- Alhara convinced Nebellea to let he keep the Atium bead for experimentation.

Other

- Quinn spoke to Alhara at some length while they both did calligraphy. He learned something of her life before joining the team particularly around the university and the breeding programme

- There was a group discussion over Pallino and Pendlehave’s future as Pallino was unhappy essentially being a servant. Quinn was unahppy that Nebellea refused to allow Pallino to handle the shipping on the Austrex end for house Pannassian. Her reasoning being he had no experience in such things and Quinn arguing it was all about the Skaa having the right to choose regardless of the loss or profit of the noble house. Sandcrown of all people brokered a compromise arranging to set up a Metalurgy shop and put Pallino in charge of it, as his old job had revolved around running a shop

-Quinn made lewd suggestions about Pidge and Nebellea’s friendship.

-Quinn and Sandcrown had an conversation. Sandcrown being poor at reading social situations had understood that Pidge loathed Nebellea while Quinn believed his friend might be falling for Nebellea. Quinn also was enlightened as to why Nebellea thought Sandcrown had put him upto giving her gifts.

- A meal at the Berylium house was arranged for the following evening it was planned to try strike a new deal with house Berylium that all Rebou and Panassian goods would be shipped through them in return for reduced rates

A New Hope

At the behest of Owandise. I’ve decided to teach Pidge how to read. Or Pellik as he’s going to be called now. She said that a noble needs a few base skills and literacy is unfortunately one of them. Feel like the best way to do that is dictating and writing. Probably a good idea to improve my handwriting too. Bella said that my vocabulary is much better but I write like a 7 year old. Swings and roundabouts I guess.

Austrex is a strange change of pace. Empoli always seemed large and bustling but this place…it’s like you’ve seen the ocean for the first time after the most water you’ve ever seen was a puddle. I don’t really have a place here: no Manny and I even miss Haru and the screaming every morning. Even the underground don’t know me: I’m gonna have to work my way up. Make a name for myself all over again. Get them to trust me.

Speaking of trust, im trying to rebuild bridges with Bella. I’m not good at the whole talking thing: I know on some level it was wrong, but I believe I did the best with the information available with the best interests of everyone at heart. Still we did betray her. I can’t buy her back, but I can help repair some of the damage. I remember Valette mentioning something about her, how much being a mistborn would probably mean to her. She’s the same, she and I. We’ve both lost people, we’re both capable of incredible things…and we’re using these god-given powers to overthrow what that god built. It’s exhilarating and it’s amazing watching her learn these new powers and embrace this freedom. The wild ride of being an allomancer. Finally she got to know what is like to soar around the city, one of the most powerful things in existence.

I want her to know that I’m sorry for what happened. I never wanted laryma dead. She was a fine lady and diligent ally. I mean if we can’t change people, if we can’t convince them that we’re right and it’s the right thing, if we just kill people who might disagree…this whole thing is a useless bloodbath. We need allies: even if it’s just one woman from a house out of nowhere.

Fuck, Bella is getting to me, isn’t she? [Pidge seems quite amused to know how to spell fuck…]

It’s strange now I think about austrex again. The only thing that’s the same about here and home is the oppression. The skaa are still downtrodden, the obligators are cruel and omnipresent. The weird bit: it’s comforting. It’s the old coat of society and i know how to move in the streets again: how to blend in and fall under the notice of everyone. Even the skaa…I’ve been brought into their midst like an old friend and I’ve already made contact with the underground. Frankly, I don’t want their handkerchiefs the guy was offering, but its good to know operations are still underway. Good to know there’s someone fighting or resisting. It’s nice to have a fresh start…im stronger than I was and have more powerful friends. Maybe this time I’ll make a name for myself.
