Session Summary In which our heroes go digging.

• Our heroes have a short meeting with the resistance. Two previously unmet member of the underground gangs are present. Everyone (except Tressex) is entranced by the amount of atium that has been stolen
• Kistaris seems unusually confident, reckons the Skaa resistance is succeeding in Luthedel (and is behind wiping out a whole house) and that the atium should be used to arm an army of Skaa and rise up as soon as possible.
• After our heroes offer some notes of caution Nobella gets told she will be used as a front for the atium and Sandcrown is offhandedly given some undefined leadership position.
• There is some discussion of this back at home, people agree that something is fishy with Kistatis, it is noted that the particularly young gang leader with him that night has been uncannily good at taking control of the gang, despite her age.

Some time passes, In which

• Sandcrown and Alhara speak in veiled terms about speaking to the memory monster, Goradel offers to distract the rest of the party while Alhara speaks with it should the opportunity come up.
• Quinn informs Sandcrown about dealing with the Iron Clips vs. Steel Hands problem, Sandcrown advises solving the problem peacefully, Quinn doesn’t like that idea. There is some sort of compromise.

And then we meet and archeologist

• Our heroes are accompanied by Kwabez out of town to meet Kykwen and his team.
• Sandcrown immediately lets on that our heroes have learnt of feruchemy from Alhara, disapproving looks are exchanged.
• Kykwen examines the heroes’ find with what seems like disinterest, refers their questions on the deepness to yet another Terris expert (this time on religion), notably another rebellious type, our heroes will have to find him themselves.
• Our heroes reach the dig site (a hundred year old noble house buried in ash) and begin digging. Some interesting artifacts are found and there are signs of a struggle.
• Our heroes uncover some monstrous wolf men corpses with iron spikes nearby. Then the remains of a Terris, clutching a package which contains a book… “The Treatise Metallurgic”
• Dramatic Music.

Tret and Sandcrown discuss the future

Lord Sloweswift shuts the door of a poky side room turning to Tret and gesturing to one of the two uncomfortable old dining chair before sitting down himself. The only light in the room is the oil lamp on the side table between them and the fading light of dusk filtering through the small window. The window also lets in the grunts and exertions of Lord Sloweswift’s special fighting skaa. Lord Sloweswift is dust streaked, reeks of sweat and looks tired, both physically and mentally. Tret, as usual when he is in close proximity with a noble, is nervous. Lord Sloweswift does not help Tret’s nerves with his silence, he nudges his cane from hand to hand with a soft thump each time as he stares down into the bright middle distance between for what feels like a few minutes before speaking.

“I’m sorry Tret.” He states finally.

Tret isn’t comforted by these words, he says what he always says in uncertain situations. “Yes Sir.”

Lord Sloweswift glances up at him his eyes full of frustration, Tret is familiar with the look but he was always discomforted by Lord Sloweswift’s disapproval, he was only acting as a Skaa should after all. Once again there is a long awkward pause before Sloweswift gathers himself to speak. “You didn’t ask for any of this, and I’m sorry in my role in forcing you to come here, away from your family. You didn’t ask to be part of the resistance either, but now you are-”

“Yes Sir”

“I’m not done. You see, things are moving fast, soon this whole resistance thing is going to be out in the open and either we’ll be on the winning side or we’ll be dead.”

Lord Sloweswift pauses, Tret knows this pause, Lord Sloweswift was expecting him to say something, after a while he does. “Yes Sir?”

Lord Sloweswift sighs. "My point is, you’ve had a lot of decisions made for you up to now, and they’ve led you here. I’ll be honest it doesn’t look too hopeful for any of us. But now you’ve got a chance to make your own decisions, about what you want to do now the rebellion is coming.”

Tret doesn’t like the sound of that. Lord Sloweswift is always leaning on him to choose between things. “What would you like me to choose sir?”

Lord Sloweswift rubs the bridge of his nose, Tret allows himself a little smile while he isn’t looking, quickly assuming a neutral expression when Lord Sloweswift looks up and speaks, “Look, I’ll try to lay out all the choices for you. First we can find a way to get you back to another noble house, and you can wait for it all to blow over-”

Tret is already shaking his head. “I don’t want that sir.” As much of the hope of safety is appealing, he knows it’s a false one.

Lord Sloweswift continues “Or you could take up arms with us, you’ve got a special talent, it would make you a real asset, you’d play a big part in whether we succeeded or failed.”

Tret says nothing, his lips tight, he can’t kill anyone for anything, not even a noble.

“Or you could work alongside the resistance, but keep out of the fighting, there’s plenty of things that need to be done that don’t require violence.”

Tret, briefly considers whether Lord Sloweswift has noticed his reaction and is giving him this option as a way out, he says nothing.

Lord Sloweswift plows on “I was thinking, for example.” He paused “You didn’t choose this, a lot of Skaa who are going to get caught up in this won’t get the choice either. You could-“

Tret lifts a finger and Lord Sloweswift stops, looking at him expectantly. Tret takes to a few moments to compose himself, this is still too strange. Finally, looking at the ground between them Tret says. “I’m sorry. I don’t think I can be that, not a leader, not showing other people how to be. You see what’s happening here. I just can’t Lord Sloweswift.”

Lord Sloweswift smiled wanly and nodded, “Just think about what you want to do, I understand they’re all hard choices.” He stands up suddenly and Tret scrambles to his feet to match him. To Tret’s complete surprise Lord Sloweswift steps forward and hugs him. Tret is frozen in the embrace, not daring to move. Lord Sloweswift stinks of sweat and ash and soap. Eventually, after what seems like forever Lord Sloweswift backs off “Whatever you decided to do, I’m sure it’ll be the right choice. And if you do need to talk about it, I’ll always make time for that.” With that he gives Tret a companionable pat on the shoulder and leaves the room.

After the door has shut behind Lord Sloweswift, Tret stumbles back into his chair and murmurs “Yes Sir.” Outside Lord Sloweswift shouts a greeting to his special fighting Skaa and starts up a general melee before the mists roll in. Inside, Tret sits and thinks of the future.

Lives Never Lived

Burning gold was like plunging into the sea in a hot day. One moment you’re warm, everything makes sense, then suddenly your vision blurs and the body rushes to catch up with those new sensations, all in the space of a few seconds.

Quinn had only burned gold once before. Bella had said it was good to know what it was like, even though the process itself wasn’t often pleasant. He’d thought he’d never burn it again, but after what he’d said to Alhara and the past he had seen…he was conflicted.

He was angry. He didn’t really admit it often, but he was angry that despite his gifts he was powerless to do anything to change the skaa lives. Despite money and a name and small training at court, he was still politically inept and long lasting change needed change from within…somehow.

But being angry at his present wasn’t fair. They’d all escaped difficult lives: Alhara had been glorified cattle; Bella, the toy and joke-brunt of her family and Fallow was a little more than a laughing stock under his own name. They had a better life now, sure it wasn’t perfect, but it was better.

Quinn thought about the decisions he’d made these past few months. Facing tressex, travelling to austrex, killing kort. As he burned gold, his mind grasped at the possibility of questions. His mind blurred, remember smells and faces he both knew and didn’t.

Concentrate on a question. That’s what he’d been told.

What if he hadn’t signed up to work for Nebellea?

Hunger. That was the first feeling. Living a life without regular, warm food. Living of scraps he stole from Haru and or other nobles. He was eventually thrown out of the brother after they found out he was an allomancer. The girls wouldn’t let him be turned in, but they couldn’t keep a powder keg like Quinn around. Word then spread, job offers from Empolian gangs, a lot of blood on his hands to keep himself safe and free. He was scarred, no limb loss, but a hard, thin body of someone who ran every day, and fought for his life every other.

What if I hadn’t killed kort?

The feeling was more pleasant. The memory of hunger went away, but he recalled blood again. The pirate had sold him out to the obligators, then afterwards good hearted nebellea had insisted they run, fearing for her association. The nebella this version of him remembered wore tatters dresses. They’d had to sell their atium to a gang for passage across scadriel and travelled through more cities and regions than Quinn knew had existed. She was unhappy, she worried for her sister, but fallow and Quinn kept her going. There was an aimlessness to him. A ruthless need to survive, living day by day.

Pallino and Penndlehave had died. They’d remained and we’re going to follow, but the inquisitor got to them first and they never made it off the island.

He let the questions fade, rubbing his head. He’d forgotten what this was like. The way it drained energy and resolve…maybe he needed to find a different present. An easier question.

What if I’d been nice to Bella from the start?

Coffee under the scadrielian sun. Fallow and Quinn were enjoying breakfast in Austrex (seems they were meant to come here one way or another) while Bella and Cassie danced. And…Valette Trochaire. The dating had gone better, the kinder hearted Quinn having the patience to like the woman enough to steal her away. They were working with the Rebellion, but crime was forgotten and they lived an easier life, a happier and more functional home than the present. Bella had taught Quinn to ride, and he taught her, gently, the finer point of steel pushing. They walked the gardens during the day, and ran through the streets at night, laughing and whooping into the night.

That was unexpected. Quinn had figured him and and Bella were destined to feud by sheer difference in lives. Instead, he had this rushing of sentiment when he thought of her. Her strength of will to succeed and bloom in the face of adversity, rather than cower away. This mellowed Quinn…he was better at the politics side of things. I guess if you can make friends with your opposite, you can make a good impression on anyone else.

He began thinking of the things he regretted. Kort’s death still hung above him, but now he saw the face of the skaa tressex had killed, the lifeless child he’d watched flee through the streets. What if he’d gone in?

It was quick, like a ball rebounding of a wall. The instant he’d entered the house he had been engulfed my muscle and flesh which clamped down on his throat and face. The sensation of suffocating as his neck was forced beyond its limit…then blackness. A void of memories.

Quinn gasped and fell backward, catching himself on the roof. Either way, they would have died. He couldn’t have saved them. He couldn’t stop the rogue Kandra. He hugged his knees to himself and looked into the night, questions burning through the gold in his system. What if he’d left pidge? Loneliness. What if he’d told Bella about laryma? Heartbreak. What if he’d tried to kill the pirates? More blackness.

His stupor was broken by the sound of Fallow and Owandise coming up the stairs.

“Watch is over, boy. Go get some rest. Is Bella okay?”

“Yeah…she kind of passed out half an hour ago when the tin ran out so I carried her to bed and I’ve been sat here.”

Owandise gave him a puzzled look, her tin and court upbringing noticing his controlled stillness.

“I’m not going to bed just yet. I’m going to go…there,” he pointed to a small copse of trees about a mile away, “I have gold in my system and I’ll burn it where I can’t be distracted.”

Owandise began to speak, but he was already gone, steelpushed into the air and off into the night, the mist curling around his arms and filling the space he had left.

The couple exchanged a quick glance, before Owandise said “I’ll go speak with him”

Too much blackness.

His mind had ran through the possibilities. It was strange how many conscious decisions he’d made. He thought Alhara and he had become friends, but some part of him choose for that to happen. She’s gotten closer to Bella as a result, often accompanying her as something closer to companion than bodyguard.

Owandise wandered towards him, his tin now expended he hadn’t heard her arrive. They talked a short while of the dangers of dwelling on the past and the possibilities of “what if”, encouraging him to flare what was left out and sleep.

As they walked, he thought of her. How he had once sat outside her window, manipulating her emotions for Fallow, would that have been a different relationship if he hadn’t?

The flared gold made his new memories clearer, he would reach to much more mild changes if decision. Their relationship had gone the same, the same gifts, the same…everything. That was odd. She must have been burning copper.

What if I hadn’t gone with him?

The memories shifted. They were still together, but their relationship was less passionate than it was. That early consummation had provided the very real early jump into the water of happiness, and instead they had had a slow courtship. They’d had to convince her a bit more to help them when Fallow was captured, but ultimately they were in the same situation, except both perhaps a little less happy and more politically and tactically minded. Fallow became a hit with the women at court in Austrex though, his lack of sentiment ruining his capacity for monogamy.

As they neared the house, Fallow nodded down at his fiancé and Quinn, needing no words to convey a worry as much as a comfort that whatever had happened had the appearance of success.

Quinn made his way up the stairs, amusing himself with thoughts of pranks he could have chosen to do, or lies he could have told. He didn’t have much gold left, maybe a minute more.

What if…he stopped himself. Thought of his parents hadn’t been too common recently. He’d stopped chasing his father and feeling responsible for his mother, he shouldn’t ask what if he’d done more when it had happened or pursued it further, but he couldn’t help himself.

A new life blossomed into his head. Gone were Fallow and Owandise, Alhara and Pidge, everyone he knew from empoli. Instead he saw himself beaten as his mother’s lifeless eyes stared from across the room, a man’s laughter rising above the din at “the little bastard who bit me”. He chased that life, to Austrex and back to empoli, then luthadel and the east, before back to the Terris homeworld. Except, he wasn’t a mistborn. Or was he? He no longer remembered soaring through the air or seeing through the mists, he just stopped caring about what might take him. He fell in with the gangs, the canal skaa trading him rides for favours in the cities he explored .

He felt loneliness again. But not that absence of friends he’d experienced already, not even the loneliness of death and other people. He felt lonely about a part of himself that this Quinn never knew. A euphoric joy and a self righteous conviction: the pride of allomancy. He felt sorry that some part of him would have never got that, and he remembered a life of different solutions to the same problems, in a world where no one cared about just one more skaa.

Then, the Gold stopped burning.

Tin Drunk

Nebellea drummed her heels on the roof of Rebou manor and then winced slightly at the sound. With Tin flaring the sound was uncomfortably loud to her, she pressed her hands over her ears and stopped flaring. Quinn sighed, why was she such a nuisance?

“Keep burning Poppet.” He said wearily. Nebellea glanced towards him and he could see her pupils were wide the iris and whites were barely visible but she still had a half dozen charges of tin in her system that she needed to purge. He sensed with bronze she had started flaring again and she twitched around focusing on a small swirl of ash fluttering near silent across the ground below. She giggled slightly watching it seeing something humorous in the drifting ash. Quinn had never seen her like this she seemed exhausted and her usual barriers seemed to be down. Well it was now or never to ask some of the questions he’d thought especially after the trouble she’d caused.

“So what was it like growing up a pampered, rich noble?” Her eyes snapped to him as he spoke, flicking back and forth like light on glittering stones. She thought for a second before answering.

“It was fun, though I didn’t like it when my brother snapped,”

“Oh?” Quinn said carelessly, feigning indifference “What happened?”

“Well Papa had gotten one of us to snap on the first time so he probably I thought I just needed more sessions with my Uncle to help me along. Obviously it did not help much especially once Darielle became a rioter. She was a lot ah!“ Nebellea trailed off rubbing her ears – the sound of a door closing somewhere in the manor just about reached his ears.

“Please Quinn! Can’t I stop flaring for a minute or two?” Nebellea moaned, hands still over her ears.

“Fine,” he said in an exasperated voice “One minute, but you’ve got to burn off that tin – it’s your own fault for taking so much of it at once,” Nebellea nodded miserably but took her hands away from her ears.

“So you and Darielle never really got on?” she shook her head

“We played together when we were younger since we were close in age. BUt she was always her Uncle’s favorite, and once she was a rioter she got meaner. She’d riot people’s trust and bravery and convince them into um awkward situations.” Quinn’s ears pricked up at that but she didn’t look inclined to share further.

“Oh come on Bella you can’t leave the story there!” She sat still and silent for a moment “You can stop flaring for a few more minutes if you tell me,” he carried on in his most endearing voice. She pursed her lips a little then carried on – he was surprised normally Nebellea was never this open with him.

“She convinced me it would be fun to play dress up together and we could style each others hair, she rioted my trust and confidence. She said she would do mine first and then I could work on hers. I didn’t even worry when she tied me to the chair, at least not until she stopped her rioting. She made such a mess of it our steward wound up having to cut the rest off as well so that is could grow back in again. She left me tied to the chair afterwards and it took an hour or so before anyone came to let me out. Obviously, she never let me anywhere near her hair.”

“Didn’t anyone stop her from doing that sort of thing?”

“Like who, father was too busy and as I said she was Uncle’s favourite.” He paused for a moment he had considered about asking after this and well he guessed it was now or never.

“What about your Mother?”

“Mama died a long while back, just after Cassie was born, she loved to sing,” she smiled slightly at the memory and began to sing quietly.

“Wake up my little Darling open your eyes,
A new day is dawning now, new sights to see,
Look around little Darling at sea and skies
Whatever you want or what you grow to be,
Wherever you wander or where your feet lead,
Remember what I say so little darling take heed,
You are my little darling and I’ll always be here for you.”

Nebellea trailed off quietly and they both sat and listened to the quiet movings of the house.

Nebellea now lay sleeping on the roof, as soon as the tin had run out she had drifted into a deep slumber. Quinn stood over her curled up form thinking deeply.

Chapter 43 Summary
  • Quinn goes to see Iron Clips
  • Currently a turf contest has begun with Steel Hands and though no official call to fix it, probably is an excellent opportunity for someone to prove their worth.
  • Alhara stops being a comatose mess and she and Fallow worry the topic of Bella and where she is/what she is doing
  • On Arrival home, Quinn joins in said worrying
  • They conclude she has gone out dressed for “trouble” with mistborn vials, bronze and tin charges, plus her combat equipment.
  • We conclude she hasn’t gone to break into House Bylerum
  • Presumably she is looking for the Hermalurgic Monstrosity
  • We find a map marking areas she was looking into.
  • Fallow and Owandise take a nice stroll and gossip/discuss the members of the party
  • Quinn and Alhara successfully find Bella and find her spaced out on tin, hunger and dehydration with a nice bit of desperation and elation mixed in there.
  • She has a name and description of the Noble Lady who is the Monstrosity ( Lariseau Geffenry )
  • Quinn rushes off to get Fallow and Owandise while Alhara is left to deal with a new and no-way improved Nebellea who thinks firing arrows near the Monstrosity and watching it react is a good idea. She also felt like sticking her head outside the window and watching it.
  • Fallow and Owandise arrive with Quinn 20 minutes later and get to talk to us and agree to go home.
  • Quinn and Bella take first watch. Quinn asks about Bella’s life growing up (Tied to a chair and had her hair cut by Darielle , jealous of her Brother becoming a mistborn, loves Cassiel, sees us all as her friends, the songs her mother used to sing).
  • She is carried to bed and Quinn spends the next hour burning gold and evaluating his own life and decisions
  • Owandise offers wisdom that it does not do well to dwell on the past and “what if”s

Next Day

  • Quinn gets up early and chit-chats with Alhara about the concept of choice and what they might change in their lives if they could
  • Alhara thanks Quinn for his friendship, apologising for her ofttimes serious if not cold demeanor.
  • Quinn leaves note saying he will talk with Bella if she likes later in the day regarding what was said, encourages her to speak to Pellik about Tin-hangovers
  • Afterwards Alhara brings Bella (late) breakfast and comforts her about her oddity the evening before.
  • Quinn spends the day on the streets looking for the local gangs of Iron Clips and Steel Hands to contend with
  • Figures there must be someone like him out there who is pushing the gangs to expand territory, trying to give themselves a name.
  • Alhara goes to Kwabez (late) and learns some defensive combat
  • He does not know more about the Monstrosity.
  • Fallow does some Science with Bella
  • Ring has a symbol of Bronze on it, ruby unmarked.
